Before going for an interview ensure that your attire is appropriate. Even with an excellent academic record and correctly answered questions, if you not know how to dress appropriately for an interview then you may not be chosen for the job.

Always ensure that you dress neatly when attending an interview, as you will be judges according to the clothes that you choose to wear. You should not be tempted to dress casually even if the employees of the company are wearing casual dress. Your first impression should not be merely good but excellent. Ensure that your clothes are clean and ironed properly and see to it that your shoes are polished with no scuff marks. Scuff marks reveal a certain lack of attention to detail. The appropriate interview attire for men is a suit and tie. The tie must be straight and properly tied. Do not consider wearing t-shirts and jeans. Clean your teeth thoroughly and groom your hair properly, before going for an interview.

A candidate who is dressed formally in a suit and tie will definitely give a better impression than one who is dressed casually in t-shirts and jeans. Your suit should preferably be conservative in color, for example, dark grey or navy. The shirt should be long sleeved and white or matching the suit. It always looks presentable if the pants have a belt. The color of the belt should match your shoes. Your socks should be dark and shoes should be traditional in style and made of a conservative coloured leather. You should ensure that your hairstyle is neat and professional. Nails must be neatly trimmed. If you have a beard, shave before going for the interview. Carrying a briefcase with you will help you to achieve a very professional look. It would also be wise to try to find out the dress code of the company through any contacts you may have.

It is also advisable that women be dressed in a business suit. Studies have shown that most women do not know the correct style of attire for an interview. Don?t attempt to be extra fashionable. The skirt of your suit must be long enough so that you can sit comfortably in front of the interviewer without being concerned about your appearance. Never under any circumstances should you wear miniskirts, sweaters or blouses that are tight or revealing or sandals with straps. Avoid wearing too much jewellery. Dangling earrings and cheap jewellery will give a negative impression.

When you style your hair, do not use hairspray. Pantyhose color should be neutral and perfume and makeup should be very light. Nails should be clean and neatly manicured, yet unpolished. Carry a portfolio or a stylish briefcase with you and avoid the disorganized or oversized handbag for the job interview. If you are feeling cold, it is appropriate to wear a scarf.

Ensure that your shoes are clean, polished and shining.
